Search Filters & Sorting Optimization on the Results Page
Design Project · 2023 · Cologne
**Short Overview** Restructuring of the filter and sort experience on the hotel results page to help travelers narrow down offers with less effort and understand exactly what each option does. **Problem Statement** The existing filter panel exposed too many options at once, mixed hard and soft criteria, and used labels that did not match users' mental models. Sorting logic was hidden and rarely used. **Goals** - Reduce filter abandonment and rage-clicks - Increase adoption of sort controls - Improve clarity of active filters and applied state **Role & Responsibilities** Product Designer leading the redesign end-to-end, with a researcher supporting evaluative testing. **Design Process** - Card-sorted filter categories with 12 participants - Ran unmoderated preference tests on three filter layouts - Prototyped sticky filter bar (desktop) and full-screen filter sheet (mobile) - Designed clear active-filter chips with one-tap removal **Key Design Decisions** - Prioritized filters by observed usage: price, distance, rating, breakfast, cancellation policy - Explicit sort menu with plain-language options ("Best value", "Closest to center") - Instant result count preview while adjusting filters **Impact / Expected Outcomes** - +14% filter usage on mobile - Shorter path from results page to hotel detail - Reduced support contacts about "how to find" specific hotel attributes **Skills Demonstrated** Interaction design, IA, usability testing, mobile-first design. **Platforms** Web and Mobile
